About The Balam Foundation
The Balam Foundation, established in 2021, was named in honor of an opinionated resident Oriental Shorthair, named Balam, who earned his celebrity on Instagram. Phaedra Barratt, his mom, wanted to leverage his fame to help the stray and wild animals of Mexico. Balam in the Mayan language means jaguar and this "house jaguar" manages the team from the stovetop.

Balam Foundation Sanctuary Support
Financial support for animal-centric organizations is nearly non-existent in Mexico due to widespread poverty. In turn, the lives of animals, both domestic and wild, are rarely prioritized to receive attention and assistance. The Balam Foundation lends our support to ensure the safety and well-being of the 100+ cats in care at our local feline sanctuary, Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka.
